The Music Director has exclusive authority to select and terminate members of OCS without recourse. Continuity is maintained through the unwritten rule that participants in one concert are automatically eligible to participate in the next one. Those who miss a concert may be required to audition as a prequalification for the next succeeding performance.
Rehearsals Starting approximately 10 weeks prior to a scheduled concert, rehearsals are held every Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Timberline High School unless otherwise noted. Special rehearsals as concert time nears can be reasonably expected. Sectional rehearsals for all voice parts can also be expected to take place. Attendance is essential, and without special dispensation from the director, no more than two rehearsals may be missed in the course of preparation for any concert. If a singer anticipates missing a rehearsal, the director or their section leader should be advised, with a follow-up to check on any missed information or material to be undertaken promptly. Attendance at all performances of the concert series is absolutely mandatory- no exceptions. To retain our excellent reputation in the community, we need to ensure that every performance we give is representative of the Olympia Choral Society as a whole.
Auditions Auditions are held annually in August. In certain cases, the Music Director may audition for particular parts in January based on the upcoming concert's needs. If you are interested, please email us at OCSociety@msn.com.
Dues and Fees There are no membership dues, but in accordance with the By-Laws, the Board may establish fees payable by all members to defray the cost of music or other expenses. Generally that is $50 per person per concert. Fees may be waived in individual cases by the Music Director.
Publicity Since concerts are free and extensive advertising reduces our ability to contribute to our selected charities, word of mouth about our concerts is a vital marketing and outreach tool that helps us fill our performance venues. Each member will be expected to assist in publicizing our events by the conscientious distribution of posters, e-mail, and any other method of encouraging the attendance of friends, acquaintances, and relatives.
