Spring 2005 An Evening with John Rutter
In the vast firmament of 20th and 21st century choral music, no star shines brighter than John Rutter. His is a tapestry of tone and tempo that makes his compositions and arrangements pleasing to every musical palate.
Accompanied by an orchestra of 22 gifted musicians which featured the haunting cello of Judith Martin and the incredible art of Karen Gheorgiu on the oboe, the Rutter Requiem wove a glorious blend of repose and reflection, reconciliation and redemption. The nearly bel canto quality of Jennifer Shaw’s soprano in two very difficult solos (Pie Jesu and Lux Aeterna) added immeasurably to what was truly one of our finest hours.
Perhaps the most striking of all Rutter compositions is an anthem entitled Hymn to the Creator of Light. It chronicles the advancement of humankind from the chaos of incomprehensible darkness to the light of the oracles, to the proverbs, and to the histories, all emanating from the light that never sets. This is the treasure - the gift of enlightenment from the Creator of visible light. It was an amazing work that awakens every emotion, but closes with absolute serenity in the form of baroque music at its finest.
